Angel Maturino Resendiz, now a well-known Mexican serial killer of at least 14 individuals, broke into Dr. Benton's home on Lehigh Street, located a Nigerian statue, and concluded that Dr. Benton worshipped idols. He also saw a report that included pictures of infants with birth defects on her computer, and assumed she performed, and believed in, abortions. He attacked Dr. Benton while she was asleep in the master bedroom. She fought hard, breaking both bones in her right forearm, and sustained several cuts and bruises on her hands and arms. Angel bludgeoned Dr. Benton nineteen times in the head with the statue, causing three skull fractures. He stabbed her three times in the back. Dr. Benton's chest was pierced completely, both of her lungs collapsed, several of her ribs were broken, and one of the two stab wounds that went through to the front of Dr. Benton's body, entered her abdomen. Dr. Benton was raped post-mortem. Angel stole cash, a stereo, a banjo, a cd player, cheese and meat trays, a statue, Dr. Benton's jewellery, and Dr. Benton's red, 1998 Jeep Cherokee.

Claudia's body was found at 4:30pm, Thursday, December 17th, 1998, by West U Police. Her Jeep was located on December 19, 200 miles away in San Antonio, Texas. In early July 1999, Resendiz crossed the Mexican bridge that entered into Texas and surrendered to Texas Rangers on Texas soil. On May 18, 2000, Angel Maturino Resendiz was found guilty of Dr. Benton's brutal murder after the jury rejected his plea of not guilty by insanity. The jury concluded in ten hours, broken up over two days, that the serial killer knew right from wrong, and knew what he was doing and knew it was wrong, when he broke into Dr. Benton's residence and then bludgeoned and stabbed the physician to death, and then sexually assaulted her. He awaits execution to this day, the year 2005. His conviction for Dr. Benton's murder has been upheld twice by two different levels of Texas Court. Dr. Benton was 39 years old when she died. Her husband and twin daughters sold the house on Lehigh Street in West U, and relocated to Gilbert, Arizona.
