Construction of the Church of the Gesł began in 1568 and was considered to be a major turning point in Renaissance history — it was built according to the new requirements formulated during the Council of Trent: there is a single nave, so that the attention is focused on the altar. Alessandro Cardinal Farnese, nephew of Pope Paul III, funded the endeavor with Michelangelo offering to design the church for free. Pope Paul III authorized the founding of the Society of Jesus.
