Chronology of Jesus' birth and death

The chronology of Jesus' birth and death is heavily contested and impossible to ascertain exactly, with many contesting what days, months, and years major events in Jesus' life occurred in, even assuming that they occurred at all (see historicity of Jesus). Due to a miscalculation made by Dionysius Exiguus in 525, it was long held that Jesus was born in the year 1 BC, making the following year, AD 1, the first throughout which he was alive—hence the anno domini dating system.
