~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Christie's quickly established a reputation for conducting some the greatest auctions of the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, Christie's regularly auctioned off significant amounts of Britain's national heritage, including items consigned by members of the aristocracy and even the British Royal Family. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ More recently, Christie's has auctioned off artwork and personal possessions linked to historical figures such as Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt, Diana, Princess of Wales, Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Napoleon Bonaparte and others. In 1998, Christie's in New York sold the famous Archimedes Palimpsest after the conclusion of a lawsuit in which its ownership was disputed. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In 1995, Christie's became the first international auction house to exhibit works of art in Beijing, China. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Christie's has two salerooms in the United States, one in New York and one in Los Angeles. On October 5, 2001, Christie's opened a new auction house in Paris. Other salerooms are located in Geneva, Amsterdam, Rome, Milan, Australia, and Hong Kong. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
