He captained England in the last of his six test matches, the fourth test against the West Indies in 1988. That was a series in which England had four captains, having sacked Mike Gatting after the first test, and with each subsequent captain becoming injured in turn. Needless to say, England were roundly thrashed in the series, with Cowdrey losing his one test as skipper.

Colin and Chris Cowdrey were only the second father and son combination to have both captained England, emulating Frank and George Mann. Chris also emulated his father by captaining Kent. He retired in 1992 after a single season at Glamorgan, and has since become a successful broadcaster.
