The American Giants won the Negro National League (NNL) championship in 1920, 1921, 1922, 1926 and 1927. The NNL collapsed in 1931 and the team joined the new Negro Southern League as Cole's American Giants for the 1932 season and rejoined the NNL in the following season. This was not to last, however, and in 1937 the team was one of the charter members of the Negro American League.
