Chessmaster is a powerful chess playing computer program, mentor and analyzer by Ubisoft. It includes different tutorials for players of all levels of the game.

The Chessmaster series started in 1986 with Chessmaster 2000. It was published for Amiga, Apple II, Atari ST, Commodore 64, and DOS. In 1991, Chessmaster 3000 was published for Windows 3.x and in 1995 for PlayStation. The most current version, Chessmaster 10th Edition, published in 2004, is only available for Microsoft Windows and Xbox.

The Chessmaster chess engine is called The King. According to the July 2005 Swedish Chess Computer Association (SSDF) rating list, Chessmaster 9000 has an estimated ELO rating of 2715 on a Athlon-1200 PC. http://web.telia.com/~u85924109/ssdf/list.htm If multiple versions of other engines are stripped out of the top list, Chessmaster 9000 ranks as the 8th best chess engine in the world.

Chessmaster 9000 defeated then U.S. Chess Champion Larry Christiansen in a four game match held in September 2002. Chessmaster won the match 2.5-1.5.
