Cheryl "Salt" James is an American R&B/hip-hop singer, and a member of the female rap trio known as Salt-N-Pepa. She was born on March 28, 1964, in Queens, New York. She formed Salt-N-Pepa along with Sandy Denton and Deidre Roper in 1985. They released several albums under this name, including Hot, Cool and Vicious, A Salt with a Deadly Pepa, Blacks' Magic, Very Necessary and Brand New.

Salt became a born-again Christian after the group disbanded in 2002. After her conversion, she allegedly vowed not to continue producing any more hip-hop albums. However, she appeared briefly on VH1's Hip Hop Honors program in November 2004 along with Pepa although they did not perform.

Despite her claim to leave the hip-hop world, Salt, Pepa and Spinderella performed together for the first time as a part of VH1's Hip Hop Honors on September 22, 2005. This was their first performance since 1999.
