Chen Chong


 

Chen Chong (1960- )(Chinese: ??; pinyin: Chén Ch?ng), a.k.a, Joan Chen, is a film actress and director. She first became famous in China for her performance in Little Flower (Chinese: ??) for which she won the A-Hundred-Flower Award.

In addition to the little Flower, she is remembered in China for her performance in Overseas Compatriots (Chinese: ????) (1979) which depicts an overseas Chinese family that returned to China from southeast Asia out of their patriotic feelings but encountered political troubles during the Cultural Revolution. The songs, I Love You, China and High Flies the Petrel, both appeared in the film through the voice of the heroine played by Chen Chong, are perennial favorites of serious music lovers in China.

She went to the US in 1980s, and has since appeared in a number Hollywood films which, among others, include Taipan and The Last Emperor. Chen also has also directed a few films, The Heavenly Shower, or ', and Autumn in New York being two of them.
