Cheboksary


 
 

Cheboksary (: ??????????, : ???????? /transliteration: Shupashkar/) is a city in Russia, capital of Chuvashia. It is also a port on the Volga River. Its geographical location is . Cheboksary had a population of 453,700 in 2004. There is a satellite city Novocheboksarsk about four miles east with a population of 125,600 (2004).

Cheboksary has three administrative districts: Kalininsky, Leninsky, Moscovsky district and trans-Volga area.

In 1469 Cheboksary was first mentioned in written sources, when Russian soldiers passed here on their way to the Khanate of Kazan. According to archaeological excavations, however, the area had been populated considerably earlier. During the khanate period the town had the Tatar name ?abaqsar, and was populated by Chuvash and Tatars. The current Russian and English names originate from this name.
