The airport services the metropolitan area of the city of Mumbai and the terminals are physically located in the suburbs of Santacruz and Sahar. The airport was formerly known as Sahar International Airport but was recently renamed after the 16th century king of Maharashtra state, Chhatrapati Shivaji.
