Charles W. Morris (1901-1979) was a semiotician and philosopher. He was a student of George Herbert Mead at the University of Chicago. His approach to semiotics was based on a threefold division of a sign into a sign vehicle, designatum, and interpreter, a concept which first appeared in his book Foundations of the Theory of Signs.
