(pronounced purse), September 10, 1839 – April 19, 1914, was an American polymath, the founder of pragmatism and one of the founders of semiotics. In recent decades, his thought has enjoyed a significant revival. He is now seen as an innovator in many fields, especially mathematics, logic, the methodology of research, the philosophy of science, epistemology, and metaphysics.
