Charles Atangana

Charles Atangana (c. 1880?1 September 1943), also known by his German name, Karl, was the paramount chief of the Ewondo and Bane ethnic groups during much of the colonial period in Cameroon.

Though from an unremarkable background, Charles quickly climbed through the ranks of the German colonial government. His loyalty and friendship with colonial priests and administrators secured him the position of paramount chief of the Ewondo and Bane peoples. He proved himself an intelligent and diplomatic administrator. His loyalty to the German Empire was unquestioning, and he even accompanied them on their escape from Africa in World War I.

After a brief stay in Europe, Atangana returned to Cameroon, which was now a trusteeship of the French Third Republic. Here he proved to the French that his loyalties now lay with them, and they reinstated him as paramount chief. During the remainder of his life, he oversaw the Westernisation of his subjects and the improvement of his domains. Today, several scholars view him as a hero of Cameroonian nationalism.
