It is a suburban development 12.1 miles (19.5 km) east north-east of Charing Cross. Barking and Dagenham forms a thin protrusion to include Chadwell Heath such that the London Borough of Redbridge is immediately to the north and west and the London Borough of Havering is to the east. Royal Mail includes Chadwell Heath as part of Romford, however they are otherwise separate places in different adjacent London boroughs.

The name of Chadwell Heath is often falsely connected with a visit by St. Chad to take the waters from the well on the heath. In fact, a more likely origin is from the Cauld (cold) well on the heath. The heath itself was infamous because of highwaymen, their presence diminished by the installation of a turnpike near the site of the current Tollgate public house.
