The original group was formed by Chad Mitchell and Mike Kobluk in 1959. Joe Frazier was the third member of the trio. They came to prominence after recording two live albums, Mighty Day on Campus and At the Bitter End. They followed this with the studio album Blowin' in the Wind. The group's sound was honed by musical director and arranger, Milt Okun.

Chad left the Trio in 1965 to embark on a solo career and was replaced by John Denver. Mike Kobluk and Joe Frazier later left the music industry, and Chad Mitchell released a number of solo albums before retiring from music.
