Cedric spent his younger years as a comedian as well, voted "most popular" and "most humorous" by his high school classmates. He began his career doing stand-up comedy, winning several comedy contests and performing at various comedy clubs nationwide. In 1992, he made his first TV appearance on It's Showtime at the Apollo. Soon after, he would appear on HBO's Def Comedy Jam and BET's ComicView, which he would later host for the 1994-95 season. In 1994, Cedric also won the Richard Pryor Comic of the Year Award from BET.

There is controversy surrounding his film career, mostly centering around his remakes of classic films. These include 2004's Johnson Family Vacation (an unstated and unofficial remake of National Lampoon's Vacation from 1983), 2005's The Honeymooners (a conversion of the classic 50's show into a full-length feature film), and 2006's upcoming remake of Rodney Dangerfield's classic Back to School (originally released in 1986). A considerable portion of these critics have noted what they perceive as a double standard in the media industry, that remakes of traditionally "black" films would not be received well in comparison to remakes of "white" films.
