Today, Catholic schools exist in each of the United States at every educational level. While most catholic elementary schools are attached to a parish and run directly by the church hierachry, some catholic high schools, and most Catholic universities are run independently, usually by religious orders, with permission of the local bishop. Among these are Boston College, the University of Notre Dame and Georgetown University.
