From a young age, Hardwicke dreamed of a career in film. In 1990, she worked as art director on Mr. Destiny, a movie about a former baseball player who gets a second chance at the major leagues. She spent most of the 1990s' as a production designer; Posse, Tombstone, The Newton Boys, and 1999's Three Kings were some of the films she worked on.

Hardwicke was already known around Hollywood circles, but further distinguished herself during the early 2000's. In 2001, she collaborated alongside Tom Cruise, among many others, in Vanilla Sky; in 2003, Thirteen was her first foray into film direction.

Hardwicke and fifteen year old Nikki Reed got together to write a movie that would reflect Hardwicke's teenage years. The script for the movie was done in only six days. Evan Rachel Wood was contracted to star in the movie alongside Reed.

Hardwicke is currently directing a series of upcoming Hollywood productions, including Lords of Dogtown; to be released later in 2005, Burden and Vivaldi, the latter of which will be released in 2006.
