Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya; Spanish: Catalu?a; Aranese: Catalonha); is one of the seventeen autonomous communities that constitute Spain. The autonomous community of Catalonia covers an area of 31,950 km? with an official population of 6.8 million (2004). Immigrants represent 6.8 % of total population. While part of Spain, the region has long proclaimed its distinct and historic identity. Official languages are Catalan and Spanish.
