A native of Charlottesville, Virginia, Beauford began drumming at the age of three, playing his first professional gig when he was nine. Eventually, he joined the Richmond, Virginia band Secrets, along with Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Leroi Moore, and eventual longtime Dave Matthews Band guest musician, keyboardist Butch Taylor. Secrets would perform throughout Virginia, often times at Miller's, the bar in Charlottesville where Dave Matthews bartended. Dave approached both Carter and Leroi regarding some music he had written that he wished to record. Upon listening, Beauford agreed, thus establishing his permanent status as the drummer for the Dave Matthews Band.
