In the United States, the term carpetbagger was an epithet used to refer to a Northerner (Yankee) who sought to gain political or financial advantage in the South during post-U.S. Civil War Reconstruction between 1865 and 1877. It was embraced by some of the Northerners involved, and is now the common term, even when no insult is intended. (Compare Wobbly, Quaker, Mormon)
