Carmilla
Carmilla is a novella by Joseph Sheridan le Fanu. First published 1872, it tells the story of a young woman's contact with a vampire. Carmilla predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by over twenty years and had a strong influence on Stoker's famous novel. However, Carmilla was not the first vampire novel — the considerably older The Vampyre by John William Polidori probably holds that title. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
