Performance History
The eagerly anticipated opera premiered on the March 3, 1875 at the Opéra Comique in Paris, and was met with great dissapointment. The audience tentatively applauded some arias from the Act One, as well as the prelude to Act Two; but Acts Three and Four were met with silence. The critics lashed out against the opera, condemming it for straying outside the boundaries of French Opera. Over the next fifteen performances, the opera's reputation grew and was generally accepted by the community. Unfortunately, Bizet died three months after the premiere, and did not live to see the success of his greatest work.

The opera had its English premiere on June 22, 1878, with Minnie Hauck singing the title role. London adored the opera, which by all accounts was brilliantly staged. Over the years, it has become the most performed opera the world over, and is a guaranteed earner for companies.
