Caringbah features a strong commercial district, made up mostly of small businesses specialising in professional services. It is one of the central suburbs of the Sutherland Shire, as the President Avenue and the Kingsway both lead to the eastern suburb of Woolooware and the popular beachside suburb of Cronulla. It has the Taren Point industrial area to the north and also the Captain Cook Bridge, which leads to the more densely settled St. George district and further north to the Sydney CBD. The suburb is bounded by Botany Bay to the north, Port Hacking to the south, and Cronulla Beach a few kilometres east.

It also has a number of named sub areas or "bays", specifically:

- Lilli Pilli, considered to be the south-west part of the suburb extending down to the Port Hacking River,
- Dolan's Bay, predominately the south-east section bordering the samed named bay,
- Caringbah, which usually refers to the business district,
- Taren Point, anything north of the above "Caringbah", home to the suburb's industrial area.
It is also possible to argue that there is another sub-area: 'Port Hacking', a small division in the far south east of the suburb. It is disputable whether or not it actually exists, sometimes being used in street directories or on mail. Otherwise the dwellings in these areas are considered to be in Dolans Bay or Lilli Pilli, or just Caringbah. Despite the possible confusion created by these names, the suburb's postcode (2229) applies to all of them. This situation is not unusual in the Sutherland Shire, or in other parts of Sydney for that matter.
