Starkweather was executed in the electric chair in 1959. He insisted that although he had personally dispatched all the victims, Fugate was as culpable as he was and that she should be sitting on his lap when he went to the chair.

Caril Fugate was tried for her role in the murder spree. The jury did not believe Fugate's claim that Starkweather had held her hostage, because she had plenty of opportunities to escape. She was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Nebraska Correctional Center For Women in York. She was a model prisoner and was paroled in 1977 after serving 18 years. She now lives in Michigan and works as a medical assistant. She had never married and reportedly refuses to discuss the case.
