Captain Midnight (Fawcett Comics)

CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT began in the fall of 1938 on a few Midwest stations sponsored by Skelly Gasoline. When it reached network status, Ovaltine (dumping its series LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE) became the sponsor. The Captain, assisted by his "Secret Squadron" of Ickabod Mudd, Chuck Ramsey and Joyce Ryan, sold a lot of that chocolate mixture.

Captain Albright was a former World War I aviator who captured an important spy before a midnight deadline. He became a special agent called Captain Midnight. He is aided by Joyce Ryan, Chuck Ramsay, and his grease monkey Ichabod Mudd - his "Secret Squadron."

When he became a Fawcett Comics hero, he didn't start his career until well after WWI (at the most generous, a WWI aviator would be in his 40s in 1940.) He also became a scientific inventor on par with Edison (his secret lab in Nevada was referred to as "his Menlo Park of the desert,") developing weapons like a blackout bomb (before or after Doctor Mid-Nite is uncertain,) a Doom-Beam Torch (a primitive laser, I think,) and his Gliderchute (his underarm "wings" that he gould use to glide through the air like a flying squirrel.
