Capitulations
The Capitulations were special agreements made between the Ottoman Empire and various foreign governments. The capitulations essentially exempted citizens of the respective foreign countries from specified laws of the Empire.

The first capitulation was establihed around 1535 by Suleiman the Magnificent regarding France. Capitulations were abolished in Turkey in 1923 and in Egypt in 1937.
