Canada men's national soccer team
The Canada men's national soccer team, overseen by the Canadian Soccer Association, has experienced little international success. In its first and only World Cup finals appearance to date in 1986, the team failed to score a goal and finished last. The Canadian team, however, has enjoyed success in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, surprisingly winning the tournament in 2000 and advancing to the semifinals in 2002. However, thoughts that the side was emerging as a football power were at least temporarily discarded with a poor showing in the qualification rounds for the 2006 World Cup where it failed to reach the final qualifying stage of the CONCACAF.

As in the United States, the Canadian women's national soccer team has enjoyed more international success than the men. The FIFA rankings for June 2005 have the men's team ranked 83rd out of 205 countries while the women's team is ranked 11th out of 121 countries. Both national teams languish to a large extent in the shadow of the country's highly successful national ice hockey teams, as ice hockey is Canada's national winter sport.
