Camilla Williams


 

Camilla Williams (born 1922) was an American operatic soprano, and the first African American to sing with the New York City Opera.

Williams trained at Virginia State College (now Virginia State University), earning a B.S. After graduation, she studied privately in New York. She earned a Marian Anderson Felowship in 1943 and again in 1944. She continued to compete receiving honors in vocal competitions. Williams then performed on the coast-to-coast RCA radio network. It was in 1946 that she debuted with the New York City Opera singing the title role in Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Williams then sang throughout the United States and Europe with various opera companies. She was later appointed as a faculty member at Indiana University in 1977.
