Byelorussian SSR
The Byelorussian SSR (Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic; Russian ???????????? ?????????? ????????????????? ???????????, Belarusian ?????????? ???????? ?????????????? ??????????) was one of the four original founding members of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1922, together with Ukrainian SSR, Transcaucasian SFSR and the Russian SFSR.
History
At the end of World War One, Byelorussia was invaded by the Central Powers on two occasions: in 1917 and in 1918 after a breach in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. The Byelorussian territory was also divided again after the 1921 signing of the Peace of Riga. Byelorussia did not regain this land until the Red Army reclaimed them in the Great Patriotic War, which they have stood since. After the war, Byelorussian SSR was given a seat in the United Nations General Assembly together with the Soviet Union and Ukrainian SSR, becoming one of the founding members of the UN. The republic was renamed into Republic of Belarus on September 19 1991, remaining in the USSR for three more months before independence. After independence, the capital still remains at Minsk.
