Burschenschaften
Burschenschaften were 19th century German associations of university students inspired by liberal ideas. The Burschenschaften served numerous social functions. However, their most important goal was to foster loyalty to the concept of a united German national state. They were stamped out by Klemens Wenzel von Metternich of Austria when he issued the reactionary Carlsbad Decrees.
