Buried Alive match

The Buried Alive match is a type of professional wrestling match occasionally seen in World Wrestling Entertainment. There have been only four instances of this kind of match since its introduction in 1996. The objective of the match is to put one's opponent in a specially prepared grave and to 'bury him alive'. It is like a casket match but instead of putting your opponent in a casket, you put him in a grave and instead of shuting the lid to the casket, you bury him. The match type is closely related to the in-ring gimmick of The Undertaker (Mark Calaway) who has participated in every buried alive match to date. This match type will be featured on the Playstation 2 game 'WWE SmackDown! Vs. RAW 2006' to be released later this year.

How a wrestler escapes from underneath the dirt once the match is over, according to prevailing wisdom, is via the existence of a trap door on one side of the pre-dug hole, through which a performer can pull themselves once sufficient dirt has been piled into the hole to conceal the escape. A once-popular theory held that an oxygen canister was simply placed into the hole, through which the wrestler breathed until the show ended, and then was dug out. This theory has a few flaws, the most serious of which are the weight of the dirt rendering any breathing impossible, as well as the possibility of a failing oxygen canister leading to a particularly gruesome death.
