Bulgarian is archaic British slang for a homosexual. It is believed that this is where the term bugger came from.

The word "Bulgarian," used today to describe the country of Bulgaria, originated as "Bulgars" and indicated a much wider region of Eastern Europe. The people of this region who were orthodox Christians were labeled heretics by the Roman Catholic Propaganda during the Middle Ages so that later on the same Roman Catholic Church would give its blessing to the crusaders so that they could slaughter thousands of Byzantine Orthodox Christians. The Bulgarian empire though managed to completely decimate the attacking crusaders' armies of the fourth crusade, captured the imposed Latin emperor Baldwin of Fladres, killed organizer Geoffrey of Vilarduen, the financier of the crusade Enrico Dandolo, along with more than 600 western European noblemen and their armies.

The fear that the word "Bulgarian" started to evoke among western Europeans at those times resulted in words in which "Bulgarian" developed a scary and negative sense. It is an interesting phenomenon that they arose firstly in France (e.g. bugger, bulger) which suffered the greatest defeats and lost almost 90% of its noblemen during the attempts to conquer Bulgarian lands.
