Budweiser Budvar

Budweiser is the name of a pilsner-style beer from the city of ?eské Bud?jovice in Bohemia (Czech Republic), brewed since 1265. Its name is derived from the German name for the town, Budweis (something from Budweis being a Budweiser). For a time the town was the royal brewery for the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and the beer attained fame.

The largest brewery in ?eské Bud?jovice, Bud?jovický Budvar, has long exported beer under the "Budweiser" brandname, and in many countries throughout the world this is the only beer that may be sold as "Budweiser" - in those countries, the American "Budweiser" is usually marketed as "Bud." Since both Bud?jovický Budvar and Anheuser-Busch have trademarks for the name "Budweiser", they have been party to many lawsuits in a number of countries. In some places where it competes with the American Budweiser it is marketed using the names Budvar and Budweiser Budvar.

Budweiser Budvar is produced as four variant: regular (red label) Budvar, whose stem wort contents is 12%, light (blue label) Budvar, whose stem wort contents is 10%, non-alcoholic (green label) Budvar Free, and black label Budvar Strong, with stem wort contents of 21%. The lager fermentation for red label Budvar is 72 days and for Budvar Strong 270 days. Budweiser Budvar has a very rich taste of malt and Saaz hops. It is easily distinguishable from American Budwiser by its taste.

Bud?jovický Budvar recently started having limited distribution in the USA and Canada under the name Czechvar.

Other breweries in ?eské Bud?jovice are Budweiser Burgerbräu (trademark Samson), Bohemia Regent and Trebzin. It is claimed Samson was the model for Anheuser-Busch brand.
