Buddhism
Buddhism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of the Buddha, Siddhārtha Gautama, who lived between approximately 566 and 486 BCE in India. Buddhism gradually spread from India throughout Asia to Central Asia, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Southeast Asia, as well as to East Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan.

The aim of Buddhist practice is to end the suffering of cyclic existence, samsara (P?li, Sanskrit), by awakening the practitioner to the realization of true reality, the achievement of liberation (nirvana). To achieve this, one should purify and train the mind and act according to the laws of karma: perform positive, wholesome actions and avoid negative, harmful actions.

While Buddhism does not deny the existence of supernatural beings (indeed, many are discussed in Buddhist scripture), it does not ascribe power for creation, salvation or judgment to them. Like humans, they are regarded as having the power to affect worldly events, and so some Buddhist schools associate with them via ritual.

Contemplative Spiritual Community (Oakland/Berkeley/etc.) $700
Does this describe you? You are a person committed to spiritual growth. Spiritual practice is a central focus in your life. You want to live with people who can support your path, as well as support others. You come from one or more of a wide variety of traditions (Buddhism/Christianity/Shamanism/Judaism/Sufism, etc.) You want to be in a community that shares spiritual practice - with regular periods of sitting, prayer, rituals, and learning about each others' traditions. You might have varied ways of doing good work in the world, either vocation and avocation or both - it might be teaching, activism, being a bodyworker or healer, nonprofit work, writing, gardening, or being an artist. You might work at home, or you might commute. You are progressive, and want to live in a smaller footprint. You might be queer, but you certainly are queer friendly. You are committed to intercultural and interfaith dialogue. You can see and feel the changes happening in the world, and you want to be a part of a community that can be a positive influence on those around you. Living in a community is an active choice you are making more than a practical reality. You want to live in a community that cooperatively shares food, cooking, and chores, as well as shares interesting theological, philosophical and political conversations. You don't regularly watch TV, and don't want a TV in common space. You might be omnivorous, vegetarian, or vegan but you respect others dietary choices, and want eat healthy food. You see authentic and open communication as the key to community living, and you are willing to look at your own triggers and reactions to things, at the same time as you are willing to share concerns with the community. I'm looking to find 2 or 3 people to begin the process of creating a community like this, hopefully over the next month, since I am at present looking for an abode. I'd like to ultimately form a community of 4 to 7. The dollar figure I put in the listing is somewhat arbitrary - but I would imagine a room would cost about this per person - possibly more (or less) depending on the size and location of the house we found, etc. Who am I? I am a 49 yr old African American lesbian, contemplative/mystic, Buddhist and progressive Christian, who does technology work with nonprofits, and writes science fiction.
