Buda, Texas
Buda (pronounced "byew-duh") is a city located in Hays County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,404.
History
Originaly named DuPre, Buda was a stop on the railroad between Austin, Texas and San Antonio, Texas. It is generaly accepted that Buda is an anglicized version of the spanish word "viuda", meaning widow, refering to a cook at the Carrington House Hotel near the train station. Buda is the center of an agricultural community that over the years has been dominatied by cotton production, then dairy farming and beef cattle. Because of it's close proximity to Austin, Texas Buda is rapidly becoming a bedroom community for commuters to Austin.
