After retiring as a player, he moved into management, having the most success with Bolton Wanderers, where he led the team to promotion from the old Division Three to the Premiership. Rioch left Bolton for Arsenal in 1995, but lasted just over a year at the London club, before being sacked. He then joined QPR as assistant coach, and then Norwich City and Wigan Athletic as manager. Since leaving Wigan in February 2001, he found managerial work hard to come by, until his surprising appointment by Danish club Odense BK, as their new head coach in June 2005.
