He was a member of a famed family political dynasty; his father and sister both followed him into Dáil Éireann, with he and his sister (Mary O'Rourke) sitting in cabinet together. Two of his sons, Brian Lenihan, Jr and Conor Lenihan became TDs in the 1990s. Both now serve as Ministers of State (junior ministers below cabinet rank) in the government of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. His two catchphrases, no problem and on mature recollection, entered the Irish political lexicon.
