Brian may be described as the Griffin family dog, but he is more accurately a dog who lives with the Griffin family. While he exhibits some "typical" dog behaviors like eating garbage, licking himself, and leaving dead birds on the porch, he can speak intelligently, walks on two feet, and has a sharp wit. Peter Griffin is his best friend, although Brian sometimes wonders why; he is clearly much more intelligent than Peter is. Brian has some issues which have led him to see a therapist, and he is also a borderline alcoholic. As the most sensible member of the Griffin family, Brian often serves as the voice of reason or a neutral party during family arguments.
