She was married to actor Jack Klugman from 1953 until 1974, having three children together: Adam, David, and daughter Leslie. Interestingly, she played the role of the divorced wife of Oscar Madison (who was played by Klugman) on the ABC sitcom television series The Odd Couple in the early 1970s. They split during the run of the series and there were reports that although they had separated, they had never officially divorced (largely because Klugman was quoted as saying that he refused to divorce Brett so he would never make the same mistake again), although it now appears that they did, in fact, divorce. Later, Brett Somers played "Siress Belloby" on the Sci-Fi series Battlestar Galactica.

On an early morning (Eastern time) episode of CBS' The Early Show (in 2002), in what could be called a "mini-Match Game reunion" with Betty White and Charles Nelson Reilly, Somers denied rumors that she was battling cancer. However, it had been reported that she had indeed battled and beaten breast cancer.
