Brand is a conservative, fundamentalist priest who insists that rules and customs are strictly adhered to, and that people follow God with great fear. He believes in a "God of All or Nothing." It is this inflexible attitude which finally brings his downfall. In his dying words at the end of the play, Brand screams out to God, asking, "If you're not the God of All or Nothing, than what are you?" The final words are from an unknown voice: "I am the God of Love."
