Bowser's unusual first name may be a reference to Bowzer, frontman for pop group Sha Na Na. The developers for the Mario series have a tendency to name characters after popular musicians, so this may be the best explanation for the character's dog-like name. Some players surmise that Bowser's actual name must be "Morton," since Bowser has a son in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World named Morton Koopa Jr. This is not true. Morton's name is merely a reference to talk show host Morton Downey Jr., whose show enjoyed popularity around the time Super Mario Bros. 3 was being developed. Later, in Super Mario Sunshine, Nintendo introduces a different child of Bowser's, Bowser Jr., who assuredly is named for his father.

In all of his various incarnations throughout the Super Mario Bros. series, he has been depicted as obsessed with Princess Peach. Though he repeatedly tried to kidnap her, Bowser has never declared what he plans to do with her once she's in his grasp ? eat her, marry her or keep her locked in a cage. He is also consistently depicted as nasty, brutish, and not particularly bright.
