Development of Borg assimilation

The idea of Borg assimilation changed between seasons two and three of the series. In the second-season episode Q Who?, assimilation is not mentioned, and the Borg multiply by raising fetuses in artificial culture; after they have grown, the metal and electronic parts are implanted by surgery, and are not generated by the body.

This was changed during season three. In the two-part The Best of Both Worlds Picard himself is slowly assimilated into a Borg.

Later, the well-known quick assimilation became usual in Star Trek episodes. A Borg would inject tendrils from its mechanical arm into the neck of the victim, almost instantly turning that person into a Borg drone.
