It was given the name by Captain John Ross in 1829 after Felix Booth, the wealthy owner of a gin distillery (Booth's gin is still made today), who backed Ross's expedition. It was initially called "Boothia Felix", but on modern maps it is marked as the "Boothia peninsula".
