Carmine Galante: 1974-1979
In the aftermath of the Bananna War the Commission's hopes for a subordinate family under the Gambino family was disrupted by the return of former Bonanno Underboss Carmine Galante. Galante quickly assumed power over the family and escalted his rivalry with the Gambino family. With the death of Carlo Gambino in 1976 Galante began fighting over drug operations against the Genovese family resulting in the murders of several Genovese members. A meeting was soon held among the crime families, as well as other leaders, and Galante was killed in a local Brooklyn restaurant in July 1979.
