History
Bologna was founded by the Etruscans with the name Felsina (ca. 534 BC) in an area previously long inhabitated by the villanovians.

The city subsequently became a Gaulic and then a Roman colony (ca. 189 BC) known as Bononia, which survived as a medieval city to become a centre of scholasticim and then a major city of the Renaissance papal states.

Due to an efficient system of canals, now almost disappeared, Bologna was one of the trading centres in northern Italy. The Bentivoglio family ruled the city for much of the fifteenth century. Giovanni II Bentivoglio ruled the city as virtual tyrant from 1462 to 1506, during which time he beautified the city.
