Known as "Bobby" or "Bob", Jones was arguably the greatest player who ever competed on a national and international level. Between 1923 and 1930 he won 13 major championships (as they were counted at that time; 7 as they are counted now), which ranks him only second behind Jack Nicklaus and his 20 (or 18) majors.

Jones was the youngest player to ever play in a U.S. Amateur Championship Golf tournament. Jones was the first player to win The Double, both the US Open and The Open Championship (British Open) in the same year. He is still the first and only player to ever win the Grand Slam, all four major championships (of the era) in the same year (in 1930 this was the U.S and British Opens, and the U.S. and British Amateurs. Only Tiger Woods has come close by simultaneously holding the titles of the 2000 U.S. and British Opens, the 2000 PGA Championship, and the 2001 Masters, which is the Grand Slam of the modern era. The Grand Slam, however, requires winning them all in the same calendar year. The remarkable thing about Bobby Jones is that he did all this whilst still remaining an Amateur, something that is unlikely to occur in the modern day.
