Higginson was drafted by the Tigers in the 12th round of the 1992 draft. His rookie year was 1995 when he played 130 games for the Tigers. Higginson has hit .300 in 1996 and 2000, scored over 100 runs in 2000 and drove in over 100 runs in 1997 and 2000. His career high of 30 home-runs came also in 2000. He is considered one of the better fielding outfielders in baseball. Although he was paid $11,850,000 in 2003 and $8,850,000 in 2004, he appears to be reaching the end of his career as it is apparent that his bat speed has slowed and he is no longer able to hit with the authority he did in 2000. Further, he will make $8,000,000 in 2005, and has contributed one RBI to the team. Higginson is the best example of how the Tigers were run under Randy Smith, a player of moderate ability signed to a long term "max-out" deal who has not lived up to the contract.
