Bob Ney

Robert William Ney (born July 5, 1954) is an American politician of the Republican Party who serves as a U.S. representative from the 18th District of Ohio (map).

Ney was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and received a bachelor of sciences degree from Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio) in 1976. He then worked as a teacher and as a public safety director for the municipal government of Bellaire, Ohio. He then worked for the Ohio Office of Appalachia as program manager for health and education.

Ney served as an Ohio state representative from 1981 to 1983 and as an Ohio state senator from 1985 to 1995.

In 1994, Ney was narrowly elected to the House. He faced another close election in 1996, but won 60 percent of the vote in 1998 and has not faced a difficult race since. His voting record is considerably more moderate than has become typical of Republicans elected during that year.

Ney is Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on House Administration. As chair of that committee, he oversees operations in the Capitol complex and is sometimes known as "Mayor of Capitol Hill."

In 2001, Ney was one of three Republicans to vote against the USA Patriot Act. He joined GOP Congressmen Butch Otter of Idaho and Ron Paul of Texas in casting dissenting votes with 62 Democrats.
